Curriculum Vitae - Frank van Lankvelt

Experience

Software Engineer, Sophos Plc, '05 -

At Sophos Plc, I have been the main developer of the Windows driver component of Sophos Anti-Virus. I've been involved in a number of projects:

  • porting the endpoint product to Windows Vista. Support for the transactional file system was added, without sacrificing the efficiency of the existing Decision Cache(tm).
  • incorporating support for HIPS functionality and Application Control, introduced in Sophos Anti-Virus 7 for Windows 2000 and later. Significant actions such as registry modifications are intercepted and malicious behaviour is detected dynamically.

Postdoctoral Research Assistant, University of Oxford, '04 - '05
Using non-perturbative analytical techniques, I have calculated the effect of a chain of atoms on a beam of neutrons. Furthermore, I have predicted signatures of multi-layer quantum Hall states in rotating bose systems.

Education

Ph.D. student theoretical physics, Universiteit van Amsterdam, '99 - '04

During my Ph.D. studies, I've considered systems of atoms in fast rotating magnetic traps and electrons in strong magnetic fields. The Bose-Einstein condensate and the Fermi gas break down under these conditions, in favor of strongly-coupled quantum liquids.

In this work, I have written programs in a combination of fortran and C and using the MPI library, for execution on a Linux beowulf cluster.

Student of theoretical physics, Universiteit Utrecht, '93 - '99

M.Sc. Degree in Theoretical Physics (cum laude)

Extra curricular

Sophos representative at IFS Plugfest

The Installable Filesystem Plugfest is an event, organised by Microsoft in Redmond, where developers of file system (filter) drivers are presented with the new developments in the Windows operating system and they can test their products' interoperability. I have represented Sophos in April '06, November '06, June '07

A-Eskwadraat, '95 - '01

I have participated actively in this student organisation, including a year as member of the board. I have initiated PION, the dutch physics olympiad for students and constructed an internet-facing groupware web application to administer members, committees and events. I have been granted a honorary membership in 2005, the fifth member with this status.

whisky.vanGeest.nl, '03 -

This website contains whisky nosing and tasting notes and related information about brands, whiskies, distillers and bottlers. I have developed a web interface to update the backend database in a user-friendly manner.

Interests

My interests are mainly in software development, I enjoy using the Linux operating system to build new (web) applications. I like to familiarize myself with developments in computer science; in recent times I have looked at transparent process migration, virtual machines, transactional memory and transactional filesystems. Outside software, I compete in show jumping and like to refine my whisky nosing and tasting skills.
